Two parents. The transgender pride flag supplies the colors of the charge; the black-and-white straight flag supplies the field, in the pattern the straight ally flag established. ^[1] It is therefore a sibling of the straight ally flag rather than a descendant of it, both being the same construction applied to different communities. The field is contested within the ally-flag tradition itself: the same source records designers deliberately moving away from the straight-flag background, one set of alternate intersex ally flags made because their commissioners "were uncomfortable with it due to the use of the straight flag implying that all intersex individuals were gay," and a 2023 set made after their designer "thought it was odd that most ally flags had the straight flag in the background." ^[1] Whether the trans ally flag has attracted the same objection is not established.
