Overview

To give Demiromantic identity a flag whose color placed it visibly on the aromantic spectrum rather than reading as a demisexual variant. ^[1][6]

Vesper first posted an aromantic-spectrum flag set on 8 March 2015 in the blog's local date display, after a requester asked for a Demiromantic flag in their set of romantic-orientation flags. ^[6] About ten hours later they proposed replacing purple with green in the Demiromantic and Gray (a)romantic designs, writing that "in replacing the purple with green, there is a more visible connection to aromanticism", then updated the set to use the green versions. ^[1] The set's image files were revised in place, so the presently accessible set graphic already carries the green; no untouched copy of the purple treatment has been located.

Vesper, posting as Queer as Cat on the Tumblr blog queerascat, assembled an aromantic-spectrum flag set in March 2015 and designed the green Demiromantic revision by replacing the purple in an earlier Demiromantic treatment with green. ^[6][1][7] The set post states that "none of the flag colors/designs are official in so far as i'm aware". ^[6] Asked directly in 2017 whether they created the flags, Vesper confirmed authorship while scoping it carefully: "all i did was alter the colors of demisexual and gray (a)sexual flags". ^[2] The Queer as Cat blog avatar is a cat graphic, not a photograph of the creator, and no portrait has been located.

The set post gathered more than three thousand notes. ^[6] Pride-Flags published its own rendering on DeviantArt in July 2015, and community and institutional flag guides later reproduced the design. ^[5][8] Circulation outran attribution: in July 2017 a repost reading "I don't see the demiromantic flag nearly enough on this website, so here it is!" was gathering hundreds of notes with no creator named, and Vesper reblogged it with the tag "biting my tongue rn". ^[9] Weeks later, asked directly, they confirmed that they had made the 2015 flag while stressing its derivative construction. ^[2] Two photographs document physical use at Stonewall 50 and WorldPride NYC in Manhattan on 30 June 2019. ^[10][11]

Demiromantic is documented in AVEN forum profiles and discussions by 2008: a user profile in a May 2008 thread displays "Hetero-demiromantic asexual". ^[12] The individual who first coined the term has not been established by the sources reviewed. Demiromantic can combine with other romantic labels, as in demihomoromantic or demibiromantic, since demi describes the conditions under which attraction occurs rather than its direction, and it can coexist with any sexual orientation. ^[3]

The construction comes from the Demisexual flag: Vesper's own account of the design is that they altered the colors of the demisexual and gray (a)sexual flags. ^[2] The green comes from aromantic symbolism, and the Aromantic flag shown in Vesper's March 2015 set is the yellow-center 2014 design, whose green is the same value the revision adopted. ^[1][6] The Gray (a)romantic flag was revised in the same post and is this flag's closest sibling in the event. ^[1] Genderfluid and bigender comparisons do not arise here; the earlier purple Demiromantic treatment is known only through Vesper's revision statement, and no untouched file of it has been located.

The flag adapts the chevron construction associated with the Demisexual flag and replaces its purple with green. Vesper documented one design decision: "in replacing the purple with green, there is a more visible connection to aromanticism". ^[1][2]

Vesper assigned no separate meanings to the black, white and gray fields in the revision post; the only creator-issued rationale concerns the green. ^[1] Later guide interpretations circulate meanings for the other fields, the Pride Flag Wiki giving black for the sexuality spectrum, white for platonic and aesthetic attraction and Queerplatonic relationships, and gray for Grayromanticism and Demiromanticism; those readings import the symbolism of the Aromantic flag and are not creator statements. ^[8]

These values are measured from Vesper's 1024 by 650 source PNG, which is lossless and carries four flat fills with antialiasing only along the diagonal edges. The post does not provide a separate written color specification. ^[4][1] Later renderings that change a shade carry their own values and are recorded with the assets that use them.

In the 1024 by 650 source PNG the white upper field runs from row 0 to row 270 and the gray lower field from row 379 to row 649, 271 pixels each or about 41.7 percent of the height, with the green center field of 108 pixels, about 16.6 percent, between them. Common misidentifications

• The Demiromantic and Demisexual flags share the same chevron construction; the visual difference is the green center field rather than purple, which Vesper introduced to make the aromantic-spectrum connection more visible. ^[1][2]
