The frayromantic identity was coined alongside fraysexual by Tumblr user EdensMachine via the MOGAI-Archive blog around July 18, 2014. The prefix "fray" comes from Old English for "stranger," reflecting the orientation's focus on attraction to unfamiliar people. Ten days later, on July 28, 2014, Tumblr user pridearchive created a flag intended to represent both fraysexual and frayromantic identities. An alternative term, "ignotaromantic," was coined by Tumblr user aroacesafeplace on or before December 14, 2014. A distinct five-stripe frayromantic-specific flag was later created on October 18, 2020 by an anonymous LGBTQIA+ Wiki user, who flipped the original flag, added a gray stripe, and tinted the blue tones slightly green to signal the aromantic spectrum.

The later five-stripe frayromantic-specific version adds a second gray stripe and shifts the blues toward green to signal the aromantic spectrum.
