Twunk Combo Flag (2024, isobug)

Subcultural Pride Flag ·

A six-stripe twunk flag published by the Tumblr flag-maker isobug on 30 June 2024, combining the 2009 Twink Pride Flag, which isobug credits to Wikipedia user kaisuteknon, with isobug’s own Alt. Hunk Flag of 46 minutes earlier. An optional device joins the parents’ interlocking double-Mars and dumbbell symbols, and isobug published a plain flag and the device on a transparent field alongside it so the symbol could be omitted or moved. Overview

isobug published this six-stripe twunk flag on Tumblr on 30 June 2024, combining the 2009 Twink Pride Flag with isobug’s Alt. Hunk Flag, posted 46 minutes earlier. Its optional device joins the parents’ interlocking double-Mars and dumbbell symbols. isobug reposted the design to DeviantArt on 7 July 2024. [1][3][2]

Six equal horizontal stripes in slate purple, pink, pale yellow, white, brown and dark gray, with no symbol.
The plain version, published in the same post for anyone wanting to reposition the symbol. [1] isobug · Tumblr · 2024-06-30

The original Tumblr post was titled “Twunk combo flag”. isobug described the design as “A combination of the Twink flag by by Wikipedia user kaisuteknon and my Hunk flag”, and added “I don’t claim to have made either.” Three image files accompanied the post: the flag with its device, the plain flag, and the standalone composite device. isobug stated that the symbol was optional and supplied the additional files so it could be repositioned. Identity & Context

Represented Identity
twunk
Subcommunity
men-loving-men communities

Twunk blends twink and hunk and generally refers to a muscular twink or someone understood between those body-type categories in gay and Queer male slang. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki defines it as “a queer man who is like a twink, but with a more muscular build”, and says the term has no single point of origin, “as it is simply the combination of two words and has circulated in the queer community for a very long time”. [4] The flag follows the same construction by combining one flag from each lineage.

Attribution notes

isobug published the design on Tumblr on 30 June 2024, describing it as “A combination of the Twink flag by by Wikipedia user kaisuteknon and my Hunk flag”, and adding “I don’t claim to have made either.” [1] The hunk flag referred to is isobug’s own Alt. Hunk Flag, not the earlier hunk flag by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413 that it answers. [3] isobug states no pronouns on the pinned profile, so no pronoun is used here. [6]

isobug published the flag on Tumblr on 30 June 2024 and reposted it to DeviantArt on 7 July 2024. [1][2] The Alt. Hunk Flag it is built on went up the same morning, 46 minutes earlier. [3] isobug’s separate twunk flag of the previous day, 29 June 2024, is a different design. [7]

isobug made two twunk flags. The earlier one, published on 29 June 2024, combines the twink flag with isobug’s sensory-friendly edit of a hunk flag by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413, and isobug published it saying “I made it for a friend who couldn’t find a ( non-joke ) Twunk flag he liked.” It carries the twink flag’s pink and pale yellow beside the green and navy of that hunk edit, in two versions, one with the white centre stripe deepened as on the twink flag and one in five equal stripes. [7] The flag on this page is the later one, built instead on isobug’s own Alt. Hunk Flag. Both remain posted.

Lineage

A combination of two flags, stated as such by its designer. One parent is the 2009 Twink Pride Flag, which isobug credits to “Wikipedia user kaisuteknon”. The other is isobug’s own Alt. Hunk Flag, published 46 minutes before this one on 30 June 2024. [1][3]

The twink flag reaches this design by two routes at once, as a direct parent and again through the hunk branch. Reddit user u/disneyfan1413 made the earliest documented hunk flag, dated 4 June 2020 by the LGBTQIA+ Wiki, its format mirroring the twink flag with the colours inverted; isobug published a sensory-friendly and higher-definition version of it on 22 November 2023, then made the Alt. Hunk Flag to give hunks a format of their own, “as hunks are a distinct gay category from twinks and do not all consider themselves to be twunks or twink-adjacent”. [8] isobug’s own account names the same starting point: “So I’ve seen a few people commenting on about how they’d like a Hunk flag which has it’s own unique format when I use this Hunk flag by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413, because it’s colors are meant to be an inverse of the Twink flag.” [3]

The Alt. Hunk Flag also draws on the International Bear Brotherhood Flag, which is where the brown and the dark gray enter: isobug writes that it “does take some inspo from the Bear flag with the bottom stripes standing for body hair, the fact that some hunks love to tan, and inclusion.” [3]

This design and the Alt. Hunk Flag share stripes one, four, five and six exactly, in slate purple, white, brown and dark gray. Stripes two and three are where they part: mid purple and pale lavender on the Alt. Hunk Flag, the twink flag’s pink and pale yellow here. [1][3]

Colors & Symbolism

isobug did not assign separate meanings to this flag’s six colours. The brown and dark gray stripes are carried from the Alt. Hunk parent, where isobug assigns body hair, tanning and inclusion to the pair collectively rather than to either stripe individually. [3]

Dumbbell crossed with an interlocking double-Mars symbol
The optional device combines the interlocking double-Mars symbol of the Twink Pride Flag with the dumbbell from the Alt. Hunk Flag. isobug supplied both a plain flag and a standalone transparent device so the symbol could be omitted or repositioned. The dumbbell derives from a gym icon by Becris at Flaticon, which isobug credits on the Alt. Hunk post: “Gym icon on the first flag by Becris from flaticon! Attribution link in the post source below ( since Tumblr hates external links. ) It’s completely optional.”

Discourse & Debates

Other twunk designs were circulating in the same weeks. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki’s twunk article credits a twunk flag to the Tumblr user parxgender, dated 26 May 2024, and does not mention either of isobug’s. [4] On 30 June 2024 the Tumblr user redacted-coiner posted separate Hunk and Twunk flags built in the style of a twink flag by cocajimmycola, taking their colours from two other flags rather than from either of isobug’s. isobug states that the flag is free for anyone to use anywhere, giving the terms as “Free for anyone to use anywhere !!” on Tumblr and “Free for anyone to use anywhere!” on DeviantArt. [1][2] This is creator-stated permission rather than a named licence. The optional device incorporates a gym icon by Becris from Flaticon, whose free licence requires author attribution; isobug’s permission does not replace the terms attached to that underlying component. [3][10] The double-Mars element is derived from the Twink Pride Flag credited by isobug to kaisuteknon; no separate licence for that element is claimed here.
