The first hunk flag, posted to the subreddit r/QueerVexillology by the Reddit user disneyfan1413 on 4 June 2020 with the words "I've seen twink and twunk flags but I haven't seen a hunk flag. This was my idea for one." Three stripes in green, white and blue carry the interlocking double-Mars symbol, the twink flag's layout with its colours inverted. It is the root of every hunk flag that followed. [1][2]

No hunk flag existed when the designer looked for one.
disneyfan1413 made the flag because no hunk flag existed: "I've seen twink and twunk flags but I haven't seen a hunk flag. This was my idea for one." [1] The design answers that gap by inverting the flag for the adjacent term, taking the most commonly used twink flag's layout and reversing its colours. [2]

The LGBTQIA+ Wiki defines a hunk as "an attractive and well-built man" and notes that the term, while not originating in the Queer community, is common in subcultural slang, particularly in compounds such as twunk and buck. Citing Merriam-Webster, it dates the word to circa 1813, from the Dutch dialect hunke, "a large piece of something". [2]

[1] Nothing further about the designer is stated on the post, and the account name is the only identifier any source gives. Later makers credit the flag to "Reddit user u/disneyfan1413" and no one has disputed it. [2]

[1] Its afterlife is larger than its own reception: the Tumblr flag-maker isobug published a sensory-friendly and higher-definition version of it on 22 November 2023, built a twunk flag on that version, and then made an alternative hunk flag on 29 June 2024 precisely because this one's colours are an inverse of the twink flag's and some hunks wanted a format of their own. [2] Five years on, the LGBTQIA+ Wiki still leads its hunk article with this design as "the first hunk flag". [2]

Derived from the twink flag by inversion. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki states the format "was meant to mirror the most commonly used twink flag, with the colors being inverted", and isobug, who worked from this flag for four years, gives the same account: "it's colors are meant to be an inverse of the Twink flag". The inversion is visible but not arithmetic. The twink flag's pale pink and pale yellow become green and blue, which are their approximate complements, while its white stripe stays white rather than becoming black, and the interlocking double-Mars symbol is carried over unchanged.
Everything downstream runs through isobug: the sensory-friendly edit of 22 November 2023, which has no entry here, then the earlier of isobug's two twunk flags, which combines that edit with the twink flag, then the Alt. Hunk flag of 29 June 2024, made as an alternative to this design rather than a revision of it. [2][3]

- Some hunks wanted a flag whose format was not derived from the twink flag. isobug reports "a few people commenting on about how they'd like a Hunk flag which has it's own unique format", and made the Alt. Hunk flag in 2024 in answer, on the ground that hunks "do not all consider themselves to be twunks or twink-adjacent". [3][2]
