Twunk Flag (isobug, 29 June 2024)

Subcultural Pride Flag ·

The first of two twunk flags by the Tumblr flag-maker isobug, published on 29 June 2024 and made for a stated reason: "I made it for a friend who couldn't find a ( non-joke ) Twunk flag he liked." Five stripes set the twink flag's pink and pale yellow between the green and navy of isobug's sensory-friendly edit of u/disneyfan1413's hunk flag, under the twink flag's double-Mars symbol. The second design followed a day later. [1]

Overview

Made for a friend who could not find a non-joke twunk flag he liked.

isobug made the flag for a friend who could not find a twunk flag he liked that was not a joke, and said so on the post: "I have no idea if this is similar to other flags but I made it for a friend who couldn't find a ( non-joke ) Twunk flag he liked." [1]

Identity & Context

Twunk is the combination of twink and hunk. The design follows the word literally: the twink flag's colours occupy the middle of the flag and the hunk flag's enclose them, with the twink flag's symbol carried over unchanged. [1]

Attribution notes

isobug published the design on Tumblr, describing it as a "Twunk flag but it's a combo of the Twink flag by by Wikipedia user kaisuteknon and my sensory friendly edit of the Hunk flag by by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413", and gave the reason for it: "I have no idea if this is similar to other flags but I made it for a friend who couldn't find a ( non-joke ) Twunk flag he liked." [1] The blog states no pronouns, so none is used here. [2]

isobug published the flag on Tumblr on 29 June 2024 at 03:00:37 UTC. [1] The post's own record carries the timestamp twice, as a formatted date and as the Unix value 1719630037, and the archived copy carries it a third time as JSON-LD. The second twunk design followed the next day, 30 June 2024 at 03:56:21 UTC, a little under twenty-five hours later. [3] The design cannot precede its own hunk parent, isobug's sensory-friendly edit of 22 November 2023 at 15:18:09 UTC, which the post links as its source. [4]

isobug's other twunk flag, 30 June 2024, on a different hunk parent. [3] isobug · Tumblr · 2024-06-30

isobug made a second, different twunk flag afterwards, on 30 June 2024, built on isobug's own Alt. Hunk flag rather than on the hunk flag used here. It has the brown and dark grey stripes of the bear brotherhood flag and a device combining a dumbbell with the double-Mars sign, and shares none of this design's green or navy. Both remain posted and neither supersedes the other. [3]

Lineage

A combination of two flags, stated as such by its designer, who names both: "a combo of the Twink flag by by Wikipedia user kaisuteknon and my sensory friendly edit of the Hunk flag by by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413". The doubled "by by" is isobug's. [1]

The hunk component is not u/disneyfan1413's flag directly. It is isobug's own sensory-friendly edit of 22 November 2023, which darkens the original because its colours caused eyestrain, and which the post links. The measurements bear this out: the green and navy in this design, #04724D and #072A6C, are the values of isobug's edit rather than of the 2020 original. [4][1] u/disneyfan1413's flag is therefore the ancestor of this design through that edit, not the artwork it sampled.

The second twunk flag, published the following day on a different hunk parent, is a counterpart by the same designer rather than a revision or a replacement of this one. Neither post describes either flag as superseding the other. [3]

Colors & Symbolism

The design carries the two flags it joins and adds nothing. No statement of colour meanings has been located. [1]

Carried over from the twink flag unchanged, in the same central position on the white stripe.

No colour meanings are stated by the designer or by any source read. [1]

Values sampled from the 2048 by 1229 pixel PNG isobug published, down a column clear of the emblem, and identical in both published versions. No colour specification has been published by the designer, so these describe the file rather than a palette. The pink and the pale yellow are byte-identical to those of isobug's later twunk flag. Five horizontal stripes, green over pale yellow over white over pink over navy, with a black interlocking double-Mars symbol centred on the white stripe. Two versions were published. In the one shown here the white stripe is three times the depth of the other four, which is the twink flag's own proportion, and the symbol is correspondingly large; in the other the five stripes are equal and the symbol smaller. Read from the 2048 by 1229 pixel renderings. [1]

Usage & Adoption

Online Usage
Published by its designer on Tumblr, 29 notes. [1]
Current Status
unknown

One documented user, the designer. The archived copy of the post renders nineteen of its twenty-nine notes: four reblogs by other blogs and one by isobug, the rest likes. Two of the four, radiomogai and revenant-coining, are the blogs isobug tagged in the post's own taglist, so they are the designer's own circulation rather than independent uptake; a third, everythingarchive, is an archive blog, which this database does not count as use. The friend the flag was made for is named only as a friend. No use outside the Tumblr flag-coining community has been located, and unlike the second design this one has no located repost off Tumblr. The design's date and authorship are fixed by the source post's own timestamp. What is not documented is any use of the flag beyond its publication and reblogs.

Rights Creator granted broad reuse; no named licence

isobug explicitly permitted broad reuse of the flag, publishing it with the words "Free for everyone to use anywhere!", but did not name a standardized licence. [1] That is a creator-granted permission, not CC0, public domain or a Creative Commons licence, and none is claimed here. The constituent designs carry their own terms: isobug's 2023 hunk edit sets none [4], u/disneyfan1413's underlying hunk flag sets none, and the twink flag's 2009 upload was released into the public domain by its author.
