Alt. Hunk Flag (2024, isobug)
Subcultural Pride Flag ·
A hunk flag made to stand on its own rather than as an inversion of the twink flag, published by the Tumblr flag-maker isobug at 03:10 UTC on 30 June 2024. Six stripes run slate purple through white to brown and dark gray, the last two taken from the International Bear Brotherhood Flag for body hair, tanning and inclusion, under an optional dumbbell built from a Flaticon icon by Becris. isobug made it after people said they wanted a hunk flag with its own format, built a twunk flag on it 46 minutes later, and reissued both the symbol-bearing and the plain version at 5000 by 3000 pixels on DeviantArt a week afterwards. Overview
To give hunks a flag whose format was not derived from the twink flag.
isobug made the flag in answer to people who wanted a hunk flag that was not built out of the twink flag. The hunk flag isobug had been using, by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413, takes the twink flag's layout and inverts its colours; isobug reports "a few people commenting on about how they'd like a Hunk flag which has it's own unique format". [1] The LGBTQIA+ Wiki puts the reasoning the same way, adding that hunks "do not all consider themselves to be twunks or twink-adjacent". [2]
Identity & Context
- Represented Identity
- hunk
- Subcommunity
- men-loving-men communities
The LGBTQIA+ Wiki defines a hunk as "an attractive and well-built man" and, citing Merriam-Webster, dates the word to circa 1813, from the Dutch dialect hunke, "a large piece of something". This flag exists because that identity was being represented through a borrowed format: the wiki records it as made "to have a unique format separate from the twink flag, as hunks are a distinct gay category from twinks and do not all consider themselves to be twunks or twink-adjacent". [2]

This is my personal take on that! It does take some inspo from the Bear flag with the bottom stripes standing for body hair, the fact that some hunks love to tan, and inclusion.

Attribution notes
isobug published the flag on Tumblr on 30 June 2024, opening with the reason for it: "So I've seen a few people commenting on about how they'd like a Hunk flag which has it's own unique format when I use this Hunk flag by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413, because it's colors are meant to be an inverse of the Twink flag." The design followed: "This is my personal take on that! It does take some inspo from the Bear flag with the bottom stripes standing for body hair, the fact that some hunks love to tan, and inclusion." [1] isobug states no pronouns on the blog profile, so no pronoun is used here. [5]

- Creation Bounds
- Created by 30 June 2024; no earlier date is documented, and isobug does not say when the drawing was finished. Tumblr’s embedded publication timestamp for the post is 2024-06-30T03:10:14Z, preserved in an Internet Archive capture of 5 August 2024. [1] isobug published a twunk flag built on this design 46 minutes later the same morning, at 03:56:21Z. [6] The LGBTQIA+ Wiki dates the flag to 29 June 2024; no location or timezone is documented for isobug, so the post’s own UTC timestamp is used here. [2] isobug reissued the artwork on DeviantArt on 7 July 2024, the symbol-bearing version at 10:52:26 UTC and the plain version a minute later. [3][4]
A descendant followed the same morning. At 03:56:21Z on 30 June 2024, 46 minutes after this post, isobug published a twunk flag combining it with the twink flag, under a device merging this flag’s dumbbell with the twink flag’s double-Mars sign. That twunk flag carries four of this flag’s six stripe colours unchanged. [6] isobug had made an earlier twunk flag on the older hunk parent the previous day; both remain posted. [6]

On 7 July 2024 isobug reposted the design to DeviantArt at 5000 by 3000 pixels, the symbol-bearing version at 10:52:26 UTC and the plain version at 10:53:28, each linking back to the Tumblr post. Those uploads are the largest surviving creator-published files. [3][4]
Lineage
- Indirect influences
- International Bear Brotherhood Flag
- Direct children
- Twunk Combo Flag (2024, isobug)
An alternative to a flag, not a revision of one, and not built from it. isobug names disneyfan1413’s hunk flag of 4 June 2020 as the design this one answers, and kept using that flag rather than replacing it: the phrasing is “this Hunk flag by Reddit user u/disneyfan1413”, a flag isobug had already reissued in a sensory-friendly, higher-definition version on 22 November 2023 and reposted to DeviantArt on 15 January 2024 with the line “Free for anyone to use and I don’t claim to have made the original Hunk flag!” None of disneyfan1413’s green, white and blue reaches this design, so the 2020 flag stands as the earlier hunk flag in the identity rather than a graphic parent of this one. [1][2][7]
The visual borrowing runs in a different direction. The two bottom stripes come from the International Bear Brotherhood Flag, which is where the brown and the dark gray enter, and isobug assigns their meanings to the pair collectively: “It does take some inspo from the Bear flag with the bottom stripes standing for body hair, the fact that some hunks love to tan, and inclusion.” The borrowing stops at those two stripes: the bear flag’s seven-band construction, the rest of its palette and its paw emblem are not carried over. [1]

One descendant is recorded: isobug’s twunk combo flag of 30 June 2024, published 46 minutes after this one, which keeps this flag’s stripes one, four, five and six unchanged and substitutes the twink flag’s pink and pale yellow for its mid purple and pale lavender. [6]

Colors & Symbolism
Two of the six stripes carry stated meanings and the rest do not. The dumbbell is optional, and isobug published a version without it. [1]
| Colour | Hex | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown | #B37130 | Body hair, tanning and inclusion, the meanings isobug gives for the two bottom stripes together. Both are taken from the bear brotherhood flag, which isobug names as the inspiration for them. [1][2] | Stripe 5. Measured from isobug’s published artwork; taken from the bear brotherhood flag. [1] |
| Dark grey | #3E3E3E | The second of the two bottom stripes isobug takes from the bear brotherhood flag, carrying the same three meanings: body hair, tanning and inclusion. No meaning is stated for either stripe separately. [1][2] | Stripe 6. Measured from isobug’s published artwork; taken from the bear brotherhood flag. [1] |
| Slate purple | #6C6CA5 | — | Stripe 1. Measured from isobug’s published artwork. [1] |
| Mid purple | #9191C1 | — | Stripe 2. Measured from isobug’s published artwork. [1] |
| Pale lavender | #CECEEA | — | Stripe 3. Measured from isobug’s published artwork. [1] |
| White | #FFFFFF | — | Stripe 4. Measured from isobug’s published artwork. [1] |
- A hand gripping a dumbbell, in black, at the upper hoist
- A gym icon by Becris at Flaticon, which isobug credits on the post with its source link and states is "completely optional". A version without it was published alongside.
isobug gives meanings for the two bottom stripes only. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki records the same three as "body hair, the practice of tanning within the hunk community, and general inclusion of all hunks". No meaning is stated for the purple, lavender or white stripes. [1][2]
Values measured down a column clear of the emblem on the 2048 by 1229 pixel PNG isobug published on Tumblr, and unchanged on isobug’s DeviantArt upload of the 5000 by 3000 pixel artwork, whose largest available delivery copy returns the same six values within the rounding of its JPEG encoding. No colour specification has been published by the designer, so these describe the artwork rather than a stated palette. The plain version carries the same six values as the version with the dumbbell, and stripes one, four, five and six are identical to those of isobug’s twunk combo flag of 46 minutes later. Six horizontal stripes of equal depth, shading from slate purple down through pale lavender to white, then brown and dark grey. Measured down a column clear of the emblem on the 2048 by 1229 pixel copy, the six bands run 205, 203, 205, 202, 206 and 203 pixels, equal within the rounding of that file, with single-pixel blended rows at the boundaries. On the version carrying it, a black gym icon sits at the upper hoist, spanning the first three stripes and reaching about a quarter of the way across. [1]
