Descends visually from the 1979 six-stripe rainbow flag, which supplies the stripes, and from the flag of the United States, which supplies the canton. The relationship is read off the design; no source documenting the derivation has been read. Sean Patrick Campbell made a version of this design with the canton in magenta rather than blue, dated by the Twilight Guard gallery to 1999 and printed in the June 2000 Pride edition of the Gay and Lesbian Times. The gallery describes this design, the one with the traditional blue canton, as a symbol that "has been seen used by the gay community for years" before his variation, which is the only dating evidence the archive holds for it and is not a date.
