Sean Patrick Campbell's version of the Gay USA flag, which keeps the six rainbow stripes and the fifty-star canton and recolors the canton magenta. A stub. The Twilight Guard gallery dates it to 1999 with "first national use as a graphic element for a pride edition in GLT magazine in 2000," and describes the underlying design as a symbol that "has been seen used by the gay community for years" before his variation. Overview
Campbell designed a series of pride flags for sub-communities while working at the Gay and Lesbian Times, which had no photo archive of its own; in his account he drew flags "rather than hunt around getting copyright clearance for photos and images." This design differs from the others in that batch: it is a recolor of something already in circulation rather than a new composition. [2][1]

Campbell recolored an existing design rather than originating one. The Twilight Guard gallery is explicit that the symbol "has been seen used by the gay community for years" and that "the variation seen here" is the one with the magenta star field. Scupham-Bilton describes the same act, writing of a United States format "before Sean Campbell changed the blue behind the stars to pink." What is his is the recolored canton. [1][2] Whoever made the blue-canton design is not documented here.

No use has been located beyond the June 2000 magazine printing the gallery records and the gallery itself. None has been searched for. [1]
The 1999 date is the Twilight Guard gallery's, on the site of the club Campbell co-founded, and it sits against the 2000 his own 2012 account gives for the whole series. The same disagreement runs through the Feather Pride Flag and the Labrys Lesbian Flag, where the archive leaves the year open; here the gallery's 1999 is recorded because it is the only date attached to this flag specifically. A direct descendant of the Gay USA flag, which it changes in one respect. The parent keeps the fifty-star canton in the traditional blue; this version makes it magenta and leaves the six rainbow stripes as they are. The Twilight Guard gallery states the relation in its own words: the symbol "has been seen used by the gay community for years," and "the variation seen here has a magenta field for the stars instead of the traditional blue." [1] See pride-usa-flag, which has no documented designer or date.
Sibling of the other flags Campbell drew for the June 2000 Gay and Lesbian Times Pride edition: the Feather Pride Flag, the Labrys Lesbian Flag and the Cowboy Pride Flag. Unlike those three it originates nothing, which is why the gallery calls it a variation and this entry does too.

Read from the gallery's own thumbnail, which is 288 by 151 pixels. Six horizontal rainbow stripes red through violet, with a canton over the upper three occupying roughly the hoist half, carrying fifty white stars in the alternating nine-and-eight rows of the United States flag. The canton is magenta. At that resolution the stripe hues read as muted against a standard rainbow flag, which may be the thumbnail rather than the design; no larger copy has been seen. [1]
