To provide language and a visual symbol for people whose experience of gender is inseparable from their neurodivergence.
aflutteringlaney introduced the term and the flag in a single Tumblr post on 6 August 2014, defining neurogender as "a gender feeling that is linked to someone's neurodivergence" and adding that it "can be both an identity and an umbrella term for genders that are limited to neurodivergent people." The post answers an objection in advance: "no, it's not 'turning neurological disorders into a gender'. Neurogender just means that a person's perception of their gender is influenced by them being neurodivergent." [2]

The creator records revising the palette before or shortly after publication: "At first, I had a brighter version. But to avoid eye strain, I made it a bit paler." The brighter version has not been located. [2]
Neurogender is an umbrella term under which more specific identities fall, such as autigender (gender shaped by autism), bordergender (gender shaped by borderline personality disorder), and others. [3] The Pride-Flags DeviantArt account published a 5000 by 3000 rendering of the flag on 29 August 2015, and pride-color-schemes circulated a copy of it in August 2016, pointing to the deviation as the full-size file. No design relationship to another flag has been documented. Earlier versions of this entry carried the 1979 rainbow flag as an influence, read from the creator’s description of the colours as a rainbow or spectrum of neurotypes; that is a description of what the colours mean, not a statement that the design derives from a particular flag. Neurogender and xenogender are related by classification, which is not genealogy. [1]
