Demigirl identity occupies a specific conceptual space within the nonbinary spectrum. A demigirl experiences a partial but not complete connection to femininity, womanhood, or girlhood, the remaining portion of their gender may be agender, nonbinary, fluid, or something they cannot or choose not to name. This is distinct from being a trans woman (which implies full identification with womanhood), from being genderfluid (which implies movement between genders), and from being nonbinary in a general sense (which does not specify any particular gender connection). The 'demi' prefix captures the in-between quality: enough femininity to feel real and important, but not enough to constitute the whole of one's gender.

The demigirl flag was designed as part of the mid-2010s Tumblr demigender flag design period, using the same seven-stripe mirrored template established by the earlier deminonbinary flag but replacing yellow with pink to signal femininity rather than nonbinary gender broadly. Demigirl can be used regardless of assigned gender at birth; it describes felt gender identity, not biology.
