Cupiosexual Pride Flag (2014, attribution unstable)

Identity Pride Flag ·

A pride flag for cupiosexual identity, the experience of desiring a sexual relationship without experiencing sexual attraction. The dominant 2014 flag is most often credited in secondary sources to Tumblr user Primadolly, with later color adjustment by Tumblr user Aro-Ace-Wonderwoman. Both originating accounts have been deactivated and no primary post has been independently verified. [1][2] An unrelated 2015 design by an unknown DeviantArt user also circulates and should not be merged with the 2014 Tumblr design without further evidence. The term cupiosexual replaced an earlier label kalosexual, which was coined by Tumblr user acelyssie on May 6, 2014. The kalos prefix was set aside roughly a month later because of Pokémon jokes (the Kalos region in Pokémon X and Y) and recurring misunderstandings about the prefix's meaning. The Latin cupio (meaning 'to desire' or 'to long for') was adopted as the replacement. [1]

Overview

To provide a visual symbol for an a-spec experience that the broader asexual flag was felt not to encode. [1]

Cupiosexuality describes the experience of desiring a sexual relationship without experiencing sexual attraction itself. The label was coined inside the 2014 Tumblr a-spec community as a more specific articulation of one part of asexual experience, and was originally circulated under the name kalosexual before being renamed on community grounds. Creators

The Creators

Primadolly

Designer (attributed, account deactivated)

Primadolly is a deactivated Tumblr handle. The handle is consistently credited across a-spec wikis as the originating designer of the 2014 cupiosexual flag, but no primary post or biographical information has been verified. [1]

Aro-Ace-Wonderwoman

Color adjustment (attributed, account deactivated)

Aro-Ace-Wonderwoman is a deactivated Tumblr handle credited in secondary sources with adjusting the colors of Primadolly's original cupiosexual flag. Some secondary sources speculate that this handle may be the same user as acelyssie (the coiner of the predecessor term kalosexual), but this is not confirmed. [1]

acelyssie

Coiner of predecessor term (kalosexual)

acelyssie is a Tumblr handle credited as the coiner of the term kalosexual on May 6, 2014. The kalos prefix was set aside roughly a month later because of recurring Pokémon jokes (the Kalos region in Pokémon X and Y) and misunderstandings about what the prefix meant. The Latin cupio replaced it. [1]

Attribution notes

All located secondary sources credit the 2014 flag to Tumblr user Primadolly, with subsequent color adjustment by Tumblr user Aro-Ace-Wonderwoman. [1][2] Both accounts are reported as deactivated. The originating posts have not been independently verified, and no Wayback Machine capture has been confirmed. The attribution should be read as well-supported in secondary sources but not yet provable against a primary source. There is a separate cupiosexual flag credited to an unknown DeviantArt user dated on or before July 4, 2015; this is reported in secondary sources as a distinct design and should not be conflated with the 2014 Tumblr flag absent further evidence. [1]

Origin

true

No verified physical origin location. Without a confirmed location, Indigenous land context cannot be attributed.

Originated on Tumblr in the 2014 a-spec micro-label community, in the same vocabulary cluster that produced aegosexual, lithromantic, frayromantic, and several other a-spec labels. [1][2]

Dates & Chronology

Period in Use
2014–present

The 2014 Tumblr design has remained the dominant cupiosexual flag in secondary databases despite the deactivation of both originating accounts. A separate 2015 DeviantArt design also circulates. [1] Whether the two designs should be treated as the same flag or as distinct artifacts remains unsettled in the located sources.

The kalosexual to cupiosexual rename is one of the clearer cases in the 2014 a-spec wave of a community discarding a label on its own initiative. The flag's design appears to have crossed that rename intact. [1]

Lineage

Direct predecessors
Asexual Pride Flag

Cupiosexual sits in the a-spec sub-label cluster alongside graysexual, demisexual, fraysexual, aegosexual, and apothisexual. Its design relationship to the asexual pride flag is less direct than graysexual's recolor or aegosexual's inverted-triangle move. The kalosexual to cupiosexual rename complicates clean lineage diagrams: a single flag carries two terms across its history. [1]

Colors & Symbolism

The flag represents cupiosexual identity, the experience of desiring a sexual relationship without experiencing sexual attraction. Beyond that, the located sources do not record a creator-published per-stripe explanation for the 2014 design. [1]

Per-stripe color meanings have not been recovered from a primary source. Per-stripe meanings are not asserted pending verification of the original Primadolly post or a faithful reproduction.

No verified palette. The 2014 Primadolly post has not been recovered, and color specifications in secondary sources vary. The entry should not assert hex values until a primary source or faithful reproduction is verified.

Discourse & Debates

  • Whether the 2014 Tumblr design and the 2015 DeviantArt design should be treated as the same flag or as separate artifacts. The located secondary sources do not resolve this.
  • Whether the kalosexual to cupiosexual rename was widely adopted or whether some community members continued to use the older label.
  • Whether cupiosexual is best understood as part of the asexual umbrella or as a distinct experience that overlaps with asexuality but is not strictly a subset of it.

Common confusions

  • The terms cupiosexual and cupioromantic are sometimes confused. They are distinct labels with separate flags; a 2020 cupioromantic flag was proposed by an anonymous Fandom user specifically to disambiguate the two.

Cupiosexual replaced the earlier term kalosexual on community grounds. Both terms are still occasionally encountered in older a-spec material. [1]
