The heteroqueer or straight Queer identity encompasses a broad range of people, including straight trans individuals, straight nonbinary individuals, heteroromantic or heterosexual a-spec individuals, varioriented people, heteroflexible people, and others who experience their straightness as existing within a Queer context. The academic roots of the term heteroqueer trace back at least to Roberta Mock's 2003 journal article examining heterosexual women who perform femininity in ways associated with gay male culture.

Colors & Symbolism
The 12-stripe Mod AP version uses a gradient transition from Queerness-associated colors at the top of the flag to straightness-associated colors at the bottom. Mod AP described the design as 'first colors for Queerness and last ones for straightness,' framing the flag as a continuous progression rather than a set of discrete identity bands. No per-stripe meanings were published by the creator; the gradient itself carries the symbolism.
| Colour | Hex | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Gradient (no per-stripe meanings published) | — | Mod AP did not publish individual stripe-by-stripe meanings for the 12-stripe version. The creator's only stated symbolism is that the first (top) colors represent Queerness and the last (bottom) colors represent straightness, with the intermediate stripes forming a gradient between the two. Readers should treat the design as a continuous transition rather than a sequence of discrete labeled bands. |

Discourse & Debates
- Whether the straight Queer or heteroqueer identity is a meaningful identity category, and whether straight-identified individuals can or should claim Queerness.
Common confusions
- Sometimes confused with the separate queerhet chevron flag designed by xenogender-aligned in December 2020, which uses a different design language.
Straight Queer, heteroqueer, queerhet, queerst, and quaight are overlapping terms for similar identity spaces, though subtle distinctions exist. Some individuals prefer heteroqueer to avoid the normative connotations of the word straight.
