Overview

To represent aroace people as a combined identity rather than only by stacking aromantic and asexual flags together. Created 'with the experiences of aroaces who don't split their attraction in mind,' which is why the flag avoids ace purple and aro green. ^[1][2]

The sunset aroace flag emerged from late-2018 Tumblr aroace community design discussions. ^[3] At least eleven different aroace flag designs existed before or alongside this one, including a 2016 design by DeviantArt user Pride-Flags that combined the purple-striped asexual flag with the green-striped aromantic flag. ^[4][5] The sunset design was posted by aroaesflags as 'an attempt at creating an aroace flag that isn't just the aro and ace flags stacked on top of each other,' heavily inspired by the oriented aroace flag by @biaroace. ^[1] The initial version was revised after community feedback, with the final five-stripe design published in December 2018. ^[6][3]

The aroace flag was created as part of a broader effort to give the aroace community a distinct symbol separate from the asexual flag and the aromantic flag.
