Diary of a Circadian Rhythm

Above, still from Diary of a Circadian Rhythm - Spring, 00:16:50 Multi media four-channel video, 2023

Diary of a Circadian Rhythm is a multi-media, four-channel video diary documenting the passage of one year of my life. Embracing both video's immediacy, and capacity to serve as a record, I weave honest and personal melodramas of my life with fluctuating combinations of audio and visual detritus. What is important to pay attention to and what is a distraction? The answer is as evident as if one was observing a crowded city park. The many video channels replicate the chaos of our individual worlds, and the multi-sensory immersion references the many screens that crowd us and facilitate our daily lives.

The passage of time is marked in the work by recurring seasonal cues familiar to me. These small yet significant details enhance our sensory experience and foster a collective understanding of each season, evoking familiarity with, the anticipation of, and connection to the natural rhythms of our world. These rhythms are echoed in our biological behavior due to factors such as natural light and temperature, but also in our interpersonal behavior and progress in self-actualization. By juxtaposing the changes our climate physically undergoes with the emotional changes I underwent in a year, Diary of a Circadian Rhythm points to the small in the big and the big in the small. It is a celebration of impermanence and a fleeting attempt to capture time on tape.

This work is intended to be seen with each channel occupying its own screen, spread throughout a space. But for the time being, Diary of a Circadian Rhythm is available to view on my Vimeo, linked below, in four parts. Mature viewers only.
