Sapiosexual Pride Flag (Green-Brown-Blue)
Sapiosexual and Sapioromantic Flag · Documented 2016
An anonymous green, brown, and blue sapiosexual flag documented on Tumblr on 13 August 2016. The blog beyond-mogai-pride-flags said it had found the color scheme elsewhere and enlarged it, leaving the designer, earlier source, intended proportion, and symbolism unknown. Claims that it began as a Pepe-themed 4chan joke remain unverified. [1][2]

Overview
The green-brown-blue Sapiosexual Pride Flag was published by beyond-mogai-pride-flags on 13 August 2016, the day the Tumblr blog launched. The post applied the design to both sapiosexuality and sapioromanticism. [1][3] The blog later clarified that it had not created the color scheme, but had found it elsewhere and made a larger version. [2] No earlier copy, designer claim, or source location for this design has been located.
The largest PNG currently served from the post measures 1135 × 704 pixels and contains three approximately equal horizontal fields: green, brown, and blue. [1] No contemporary source assigns meanings to the colors. Later community sources repeat an unverified claim that the design originated on 4chan as a Pepe the Frog joke, but no originating post has been located. [4] The flag has continued to appear in reference pages, merchandise, and redesign discussions without documented organizational adoption. [4][5]
Identity & Context
- Represented Identity
- Sapiosexuality and sapioromanticism, as identified by the 2016 publisher
The 2016 Tumblr post defined sapiosexuality and sapioromanticism as sexual or romantic attraction to intelligence, sometimes without consideration of gender, and applied the same image to both terms. [1] The term sapiosexual was publicly explained by LiveJournal user wolfieboy in 2002, with a self-reported coinage date in summer 1998: "I invented this term while on too little sleep driving up from SF in the summer of '98". [6] OkCupid included sapiosexual among its expanded orientation options in 2014, contributing to the term's wider circulation before this flag appeared. [7]
This archive files the flag under its sexuality category because that is the identity the publisher named. The classification is not an endorsement or a clinical determination, and whether sapiosexuality is an orientation at all is disputed; the positions are set out in Discourse.

Designer of the underlying color scheme
The designer of the green-brown-blue color scheme is unknown. The earliest located publisher explicitly stated that the scheme was not its creation and that it had been found elsewhere. No earlier post, designer claim, construction specification, or rights statement has been located. [2]
Fy (beyond-mogai-pride-flags)
Earliest located publisher and enlarger
beyond-mogai-pride-flags was a Tumblr flag blog launched by a user identifying themself as Fy on 13 August 2016. The green-brown-blue flag was published as one of the blog's first posts that day, opening "Let's kick off this new blog with an already well-known orientation that others do no believe deserves a pride flag: Sapiosexuality and Sapioromanticism!" The account later stated that it had found the color scheme elsewhere and had only made a larger flag from it. Fy is therefore the earliest located publisher and enlarger of this copy, not the documented designer of the underlying scheme. Fy is the pseudonym the operator signs the blog's own posts with; nothing else about the person is documented. [1][3][2]

As for the Sapiosexual flag color scheme, that is not of my own creation. I found it and just made a bigger flag for it. [2]

Dates & Chronology
- Earliest located publication
- Circulation
- Documented 2016; in online circulation from 13 August 2016. Adoption unknown.
- Creation Bounds
- The creation date is unknown. It is no later than 13 August 2016, the date Tumblr files the earliest located publication under; the post's own timestamp is 14 August 2016, 02:15 UTC, which is the evening of the 13th in North American local time. The publisher stated that the colour scheme was found elsewhere, so the design is older than the post by an unknown margin. [1][2] A June 2016 discussion on the Asexual Visibility and Education Network in which two participants said they had not seen a sapio flag concerns a separate 2015 design and cannot establish when this one was created. [8]
The publishing post has accumulated 2,846 notes. The same blog later published four differently coloured sapiosexual flags: #2, credited to Clara-the-humann, and #3 on 23 October 2016, #4 on 11 November 2016, and #5 on 24 November 2016, introducing #2 with the statement that the first flag's colouring had "some problems with its color palette". [1][9][10][11]
Flag-making for this identity predates the green-brown-blue design. On 16 February 2015, AVEN member Spectre/Ex/Machina shared a Sapio Sexual/Romantic/Sensual Flag in grey, navy, white and black, posted to their own Tumblr. [12] When an AVEN member asked on 19 June 2016 whether a sapioromantic or sapiosexual flag existed, Spectre/Ex/Machina linked that 2015 design as "my rough draft"; the thread neither displays nor mentions the green-brown-blue flag. [8] Nothing connects the two designs beyond the identity they represent.
Later community wikis repeat an unverified claim that the flag began as a satirical 4chan design using colors associated with Pepe the Frog. No originating 4chan post, designer statement, or contemporaneous attribution has been located. A surviving reply attached to the 2016 Tumblr post says "Pepe," which documents an association made by at least one reader but does not establish the flag's origin. [4][1]
Lineage
No parent, descendant or sibling is documented: the designer is unknown, no source design is named, and no later flag is recorded as derived from this one.
Other flags for the same identity are related by what they represent, not by documented descent: Spectre/Ex/Machina's grey, navy, white and black Sapio Sexual/Romantic/Sensual Flag, shared February 2015 [12]; Sapiosexual Pride Flag #2, by Clara-the-humann, published 23 October 2016 [9]; Sapiosexual Pride Flag #3, publisher unidentified, published the same day [9]; #4, published 11 November 2016 [10]; #5, published 24 November 2016 [11]; and later redesigns clearly labelled as separate designs. None of these has its own entry in this database yet. The later blog's numbering of subsequent posts #2 through #5 does not make this design "the original"; it makes it the earliest in that blog's own sequence.
Colors & Symbolism
No contemporary source assigns meanings to the three colors. The 2016 publication defines the represented identities but does not explain the palette. [1] Later interpretations such as green for knowledge, brown for grounding, or blue for depth are retrospective and should not be presented as the designer's intent.
| Colour | Measured from the largest currently served 2016 Tumblr PNG | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Green | #3C7E14 | The top band. Measured from the largest currently served 2016 Tumblr PNG, where it covers 31.7 per cent of the image. [1] |
| Brown | #955438 | The middle band. Measured from the largest currently served 2016 Tumblr PNG, where it covers 31.5 per cent of the image. [1] |
| Blue | #1727F8 | The bottom band. Measured from the largest currently served 2016 Tumblr PNG, where it covers 31.7 per cent of the image. [1] |
This flag has no official digital palette. Color values shown are approximate.
These are exact dominant pixel values in the surviving Tumblr source artifact, not a separately published designer palette. The file also contains blended pixels at the stripe boundaries because the image was enlarged or resampled. [1]

Three approximately equal horizontal bands, green over brown over blue, with no symbol or emblem. At the centre column of the 1135 × 704 source artifact the bands run 223 solid green rows, 18 blended transition rows, 222 solid brown rows, 18 blended transition rows, and 223 solid blue rows; the blended rows are enlargement or resampling artifacts, not additional design colours. [1]
No construction sheet or designer specification has been located. The intended proportion is unknown: the source artifact is 704:1135, about 8:13, and nothing documents whether that shape was chosen or incidental. The artwork shown here is an archive reconstruction at the archive's standard 3:5, drawn from the three dominant pixel values measured in the source artifact. [1]

Discourse & Debates
- Discussion of sapiosexuality includes disagreement over whether the term describes a sexual or romantic orientation, a preference, or a broader pattern of attraction. Participants in a 2016 AVEN thread also argued over whether definitions centered on "intelligence" could reproduce ableist, classist, or racialized judgments. These are documented participant positions, not settled properties of every person using the label. [8]
- The flag has a separate provenance dispute. Community wikis repeat an unverified story that it originated as a Pepe-themed 4chan joke, while later users have criticized or redesigned its palette without resolving that history. The available evidence supports recording the dispute, not endorsing either an authentic-community or satirical-origin narrative. [4][9][5]
