Overview

The green-brown-blue Sapiosexual Pride Flag was published by beyond-mogai-pride-flags on 13 August 2016, the day the Tumblr blog launched. The post applied the design to both sapiosexuality and sapioromanticism. ^[1][3] The blog later clarified that it had not created the color scheme, but had found it elsewhere and made a larger version. ^[2] No earlier copy, designer claim, or source location for this design has been located.

The 2016 Tumblr post defined sapiosexuality and sapioromanticism as sexual or romantic attraction to intelligence, sometimes without consideration of gender, and applied the same image to both terms. ^[1] The term sapiosexual was publicly explained by LiveJournal user wolfieboy in 2002, with a self-reported coinage date in summer 1998: "I invented this term while on too little sleep driving up from SF in the summer of '98". ^[6] OkCupid included sapiosexual among its expanded orientation options in 2014, contributing to the term's wider circulation before this flag appeared. ^[7]

The earliest located publisher explicitly stated that the scheme was not its creation and that it had been found elsewhere: "As for the Sapiosexual flag color scheme, that is not of my own creation. It is no later than 13 August 2016, the date Tumblr files the earliest located publication under; the post's own timestamp is 14 August 2016, 02:15 UTC, which is the evening of the 13th in North American local time. The publisher stated that the colour scheme was found elsewhere, so the design is older than the post by an unknown margin. ^[1][2] A June 2016 discussion on the Asexual Visibility and Education Network in which two participants said they had not seen a sapio flag concerns a separate 2015 design and cannot establish when this one was created. ^[8]

The publishing post has accumulated 2,846 notes. The same blog later published four differently coloured sapiosexual flags: #2, credited to Clara-the-humann, and #3 on 23 October 2016, #4 on 11 November 2016, and #5 on 24 November 2016, introducing #2 with the statement that the first flag's colouring had "some problems with its color palette". ^{[1][9][10][11]}

Flag-making for this identity predates the green-brown-blue design. On 16 February 2015, AVEN member Spectre/Ex/Machina shared a Sapio Sexual/Romantic/Sensual Flag in grey, navy, white and black, posted to their own Tumblr. ^[12] When an AVEN member asked on 19 June 2016 whether a sapioromantic or sapiosexual flag existed, Spectre/Ex/Machina linked that 2015 design as "my rough draft"; the thread neither displays nor mentions the green-brown-blue flag. ^[8] Nothing connects the two designs beyond the identity they represent.

Later community wikis repeat an unverified claim that the flag began as a satirical 4chan design using colors associated with Pepe the Frog. No originating 4chan post, designer statement, or contemporaneous attribution has been located. A surviving reply attached to the 2016 Tumblr post says "Pepe," which documents an association made by at least one reader but does not establish the flag's origin. ^[4][1]
