Black Pride Flags

Not every Pride flag in this database represents a Queer identity. Black Pride has its own symbolic tradition, older than the Pride flag-form and independent of it: Juneteenth marks 19 June 1865, and Ben Haith’s Juneteenth flag of 1997 reached flag form on its own terms nearly two decades before the designs that surround it here. Flags belong in this category when they are made for or adopted by Black communities, whether or not they are LGBTQ+ symbols, and they are documented as themselves rather than as a subset of Queerness. Where a flag sits at the intersection — a city adopting a Juneteenth flag alongside its LGBTQIA and transgender flags, as Salt Lake City did in 2025 — the entry says so plainly and credits both traditions.
