Me in my studio, 2024
Will Montgomery (he/any) is an artist, writer, and educator based in Chicago. His interdisciplinary practice explores Queer futurist embodiment through the material and symbolic language of the pride flag. Treating textile as a site of memory, refusal, and world-building, his work critically engages the present from a utopian perspective. He holds a BFA in Fine Art from New York University and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Over the two years, Will has activated public space through performance interventions—ironing pride flags in parks and Queer bars across New York City. He maintains several public flag installations throughout the tri-state area and continues to produce site-specific banners, experimental textiles, and collective activations in Chicago. He also serves as Chair of the Wethersfield Pride Committee in his hometown of Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he leads public programming and community-centered Queer celebration. His independently published essay, A Pre-Utopian Pride Flag Code, is the first in a series exploring Queer symbology, solidarity, and visual culture. His forthcoming essay, An Anthropology of the Rainbow (Flag), will be published in 2025.
His work has been featured in You Stir The Pot, Noise Art Magazine, Color Club, and Canvas. His writing is available online or in-store at Printed Matter Bookstores.
